Sierra Drives Home the Luas

Sierra’s Civil Division will be busy investigating slit trenches for the Railway Procurement Agency over the next few months as part of the wider Government Transport plan to build further Luas and Metro lines throughout Dublin

The purpose of the Investigation is to establish the size, type, level gradient and position of all existing utilities and associated fixtures, including any underground culverts, basements, chambers etc. in order to facilitate the design, planning and diversion of utility services. The investigations will be undertaken at various locations in Dublin City Centre where traffic and pedestrian volumes are generally high during the day. They will also be carried out in the greater Dublin area where traffic and pedestrian volumes vary from high to moderate throughout the day.

The main objective of the slit trenching investigations is:

  • To establish an effective mapping survey of all the existing services along the nominated route both in terms of depth and position.

  • To provide the information in an electronic format which may be used for design and development by RPA engineers and designers.

  • To check the accuracy of existing records within the designated zone and where necessary adjust or correct the information.
